Fast Food Workers Protest Pick Up In San Francisco

Fast Food Workers Protest Pick Up In San Francisco

As the fast-food strike continues to gain momentum, they is an increase in the number of workers who are demanding to be paid $15 an hour in San Francisco. On Wednesday saw a number of workers who are demanding higher pay gathering in front of McDonald’s office in the Mission District seeking the attention of fast food chain’s management.

According to San Francisco’s GBS Local, organizers of the protest stated that similar protests which will see workers demanding a higher wages as well as union for minimum wages will be witnessed in over 230 college campuses and cities in the coming months. The campaign was initially started by SEIU (Service Employees International Union), which began back in 2012.
There was also a similar strike witnessed in New York in front of a McDonalds shop with more protests planned to take place in the coming days.

Earlier this year McDonald agreed to pay their workers one dollar more than the local minimum wage which has been set. In addition to that they also agreed to allow their workers to accrue paid time off. That said it is good to note that this new rules by McDonalds are only applicable to companies which are strictly owned by the company and that is only 10% of the 14,300 chain’s that are under the name.

According to new reports, Wendy’s, Burger Kings and McDonald’s have stated that they do not have control over employment decisions at most of their franchised restaurants and as a result enforcing such rules is next to impossible.
