Uber halts low-cost ride service in Seoul, seeks to avoid ban

On Friday, Uber Technologies Inc, an online taxi service, said that it would be suspending its low cost uberX ride services in South Korea.
According to Uber the decision by to suspend the services in Seoul, which is to be effected come Friday this week, was part of the companies effort in ensuring that its business in line with the regulations which have been set out by officials in the country.

According to South Korea, Uber’s service which allows customers to partner with drivers who do not have a commercial license is illegal adding that it has also angered the taxi industry of the country.
In a statement which was issue out by Uber, the online taxi service company said that, "We stay committed to cooperate to reach a compromise with the city and taxi industry, and look forward to working together to bring regulated options to Seoul."

Authorities will be reviewing the latest decision that has been made by Uber before they decide on a response that they will be giving out, a city official said.

Over the past few months the online taxi service has been under a lot of scrutiny in South Korea as well as other countries all over the world for using drivers who have not been licensed by their countries to be drivers.

The transport ministry in South Korea have vowed to shut down Uber and a reward of up to $910 (1 million) is being offered to anyone who reports drivers who are using Uber services to offer transport services is being offered by Seoul.
